Hakata's rich and diverse cultural heritage is reflected throughout the city. But as you travel through the bustling streets you may have a few questions about the name. Why are some areas called Hakata and others known as Fukuoka.
As Japan's oldest city, Hakata has remained a prosperous seaport for 2,000 years but was a major trade center with China and Korea during the 8th to the 17th century. When Kublai Khan and his Mongols invaded Hakata during the 13th century, samurais arrived and built a 12-mile long stone barrier along the coast of Hakata Bay. After beating back the Mongols, the samurai stayed and the castle town of Fukuoka was born. Through the centuries the two towns lived separate lives and merged in 1889, but Hakata remained the name of one of Fukuoka's central districts and the main railway station. But no matter what name you use, this lovely port city is a thriving, modern metropolis just waiting to be explored. This four-hour adventure is a great way to acquaint yourself with the city and all its splendors. An onboard guide will point out areas of interest along the way. After boarding your air-conditioned motorcoach at the pier you'll travel to Ohori Garden, This park is very calm and relaxing park even though it is located in city area and surrounded by buildings. You can enjoy Japanese garden. Fukuoka's oldest shrine is your next destination. Founded in 757, the Kushida Shrine has been the site of local merchants who pray for prosperity and health. The shrine is also the centerpiece of a 1,200 year-old festival called Yamakasa. In mid-July massive one-ton floats, elaborately decorated with depictions of gods, samurais, mythical creatures or historical figures are pulled through the town and put on display at the shrine. Your final stop is a tour of the Hakata Machiya Folk Museum. Housed in three separate buildings, the museum celebrates the city's artistic legacy. Among the many sights you'll see include a 150-year-old house, Japanese paintings, and craftware.
After shopping in the museum gift shop you'll reboard your coach for the enjoyable trip back to your ship, with a memories to share with your fellow passengers, family and friends.
