Board your motorcoach and drive past Fukuoka Airport en route to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. Dedicated in 905 A.D., the shrine commemorates a Heian official renowned for his learning and his purity of heart. The current shrine dates to 1591 and is a classic example of Momoyama Period architecture with its elegant, Buddhist-inspired bridges, serene ponds and ancient camphor trees. Browse for souvenirs along the street leading to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine.
Continue to Kushida Shrine in the heart of Hakata, passing the Tenjin Business District. Founded in 758, the shrine is the starting point for the Oiyama race that ends the city's annual summer festival. The temple also displays a pair of anchor stones from the 13th century Mongolian invasion fleet.
