WHAT YOU VISIT
Dazaifu Tenman-gu Shrine
Dazaifu is a living testament to the history and culture of Japan's ancient times. Dedicated in 905, the Shinto shrine commemorates Sugawara no Michizane, a scholar and poet renowned for his learning. The current shrine dates to 1591 and is just one of 12,000 shrines across Japan that honor Michizane who died in 903. The grounds span over 3,000 acres and includes several structures including the shrine, which is a classic example of Momoyama Period architecture with elegant, Buddhist-inspired bridges, serene ponds and ancient camphor trees.
Kyushu National Museum
Opened in 2005, the museum's collections focus on Japan's rich cultural heritage from the prehistoric era to the Edo Period and details how other Asian cultures have influenced the nation over the centuries. Among the impressive collection of artifacts are National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties. (Photography is not allowed in the museum.)
PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
After passing through the tori gate of the Dazaifu Tenman-gu Shrine, you'll cross three enchanting bridges and walk into the main shrine. According to legend, one of the plum trees on the right followed Michizane into exile and flew to Dazaifu from Kyoto to be by his side. Registered as an Important Cultural Property, the grounds contain two ponds and a treasure house.
