Calling all hikers, adventurers, nature enthusiasts and photographers-set your sights and cameras on the unspoiled beauty of Gran Canaria's environs on this energetic excursion that takes you off the beaten path and into the island's rugged interior.

In addition to comfortable shoes, be sure to wear a hat, waterproof jacket and a backpack. And bring a camera to record the day's unforgettable sights.

Your exhilarating full-day guided adventure begins with a 45-minute drive into the island's heart to the charming village of Firgas for a guided tour of its historic center. Here, you'll see a number of cultural and religious sites including the 514-year-old Parish Church of San Roque. Nearby is a monument to San Juan de Ortega, the town's patron saint. From this viewpoint you have panoramic views of the northern coast; if the day is clear you can even see the distant islands of Tenerife and Fuerteventura.

Dating back to 1488, Firgas is famous for its production of sparkling mineral water. In fact, 200,000 bottles are produced every day and exported throughout the islands. But in the 15th century the town was known for its gofio, or cornmeal. During your walk you'll see the Molino del Conde, a working gofio mill from the 16th century, and witness how the force of water helps crush the corn.

This is the perfect starting point to begin your hike into the lush valley of Azuaje. Breathe in the fresh air and fill your senses with scenic beauty as you make your way along the narrow canyon trail. As part of the Forest of Doramas, the area is home to the island's last remaining laurel trees. The area was mostly destroyed in the 16th century to provide fuel for the sugar mills, timber for houses and boats, and to make room for crops.

By now you may be getting hungry and what better place than this rustic setting for a picnic? While you soak up your stunning surroundings you can relax with a sandwich, fruit and water. Then, it's time to stretch your legs and continue your hike to the bottom of the valley.

Another remnant of the area's past can be found in the ruins of Balneario de Azuaje. Once a thriving spa, it was believed that the nearby spring held therapeutic properties. Prized for its idyllic setting, the health resort was a popular retreat in the 19th century.

The property was left to ruin following the Spanish Civil War and World War II but, today, it can still be admired for its old elegance set against the valley's wild vegetation.

Upon your return to Firgas, your efforts will be rewarded with a refreshing soft drink and savory tapas.

Then, you'll rejoin your coach for the scenic ride back to your ship and a camera filled with memories of your lovely day to be shared with family and friends.
