What you will visit:
Genoa (driving tour and independent exploration)
Nicknamed La Superba (the proud one) for its glorious past and ancient landmarks, Genoa was once the center of a medieval empire. This beautiful city's rich trading heritage lives on in the dynamic architecture of its old town core, one of the largest historic centers in Europe. Genoa, fronting the Ligurian Sea, has a newly renovated harbor designed by architect and native son Renzo Piano, complete with a biosphere containing botanical gardens and the Bigo Crane, a modern icon of the city.
What you will see along the way:
Discover Genoa's lively inner city on your comprehensive motorcoach tour, then get a closer look when you explore on your own. See Caruggi, the medieval center, admire the reimagined harbor front, and drive by such landmarks as Casa di Colombo, Via XX Settembre, Basilica di Carignano, Ponte Monumentale, Chiesa di Santo Stefano, Promenade di Corso Italia, and La Collina di Albaro. Enjoy a 60-minute stop at centrally located De Ferrari Square surrounded by public buildings, the 19th-century Stock Exchange, and the neoclassical opera house.
Photo Opportunity:
Your driving tour makes two stops to photograph Castelletto Hill, overlooking old town and the sea, and Boccadasse, a picturesque old mariners neighborhood.
Shopping:
Amazing artisan shops-from antique apothecaries and stationers to bookstores, art galleries and confectionary shops-can be found during your stroll through the narrow streets of Genoa's lively inner city. Popular mementos include handmade pottery, lace and jewelry and well-loved second-hand goods found in outdoor marketplaces. Genoa is where pesto originated, so be sure to pick up a jar.
Lunch:
Plentiful seafood, fresh pesto and soft, flavorful focaccia are just a few of the regional favorites. At your own expense, enjoy lunch during your independent exploration, ducking into sidewalk cafés and charming restaurants, or indulge in a variety of offerings from the many street vendors, great for snacking on the go. Don't miss the gobeletti (jam tarts), thought to be the city's oldest dessert.
