Gdansk, Sopot, and Gdynia. Each of these beautiful Baltic cities has its own unique offerings. One is steeped in history dating back a milennium. One is a famous seaside resort. And one is a symbol of contemporary development. Can't choose which to visit? You don't have to. Because during this full-day excursion, you'll have the chance to explore the fascinating highlights of all three!
Board an air-conditioned motorocoach at your pier and set out on your adventure which takes you first to a photo stop at Gdynia's famous Kosciuszko Square. This large plaza commemorates one of Poland's most revered heroes - Tadeusz Kosciuszko, who fought in the American Revolution and led Poland's revolt against Prussia in 1793. Drive to Gdansk. En route, you'll pass the towering Oliwa Cathedral, a 13th-century Cistercian shrine known for its massive pipe organ.
Cross the sparkling Motlawa River into the fabled city of Gdansk. With a history dating back 1000 years, Gdansk is famous for being a rich port, a bustling cultural center, the site of the beginning of WWII and the birthplace of the Solidarity movement - the trade-labor movement that played a pivotal role in bringing down the Iron Curtain. As you make your way into the city, enjoy stunning views of the old port and historic Long Wharf with its wood crane - perhaps the largest wood crane in Europe! Step off your motorcoach and take a walking tour of Green Gate, the oldest gate in Gdansk located in the city's old fortified walls. Built to serve as the formal residence of Polish monarchs, it features magnificent arched passages and is home to many exhibitions and galleries. Then set out on your own for an hour to explore Gdansk's Main Town.
Revel in breathtaking Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture as you wander. Stroll along Long Street, a 13th-century merchant road and the site of executions of witches, heretics and criminals in centuries past. Visit Artus Court, a 15th-century merchant's palace. Pause at Neptune's Fountain, a bronze trident-wielding behemoth created in 1615. Tour St. Mary's Basilica, the world's largest brick church featuring room for 25,000 worshippers. Take time to shop for souvenirs and amber jewelry. Gdansk is, after all, one of the amber centers of the world! Following your individual exploration, you'll reconvene with your tour group at a local restaurant to enjoy a snack of pie and coffee. Then re-board your motorcoach for your trip back to port. Keep a keen eye out as you leave the city, as you'll drive past Gdansk Shipyards and Solidarity Square with its monument to the striking workers slain by the regime in 1970.
