WHAT YOU WILL VISIT:
Takeshima Island with Yaotomi Shrine visit
Visitors to Takeshima can walk the 680-meter circumference of this tiny spot in about thirty minutes, but for such a small area the island packs a huge cultural punch. Connected by a 387-meter-long bridge to the coast of Gamagori, the entire island is registered as a national monument and boasts five shrines on its shores. Nestled in the center of this verdant space is the Yaotomi Shrine, which features a stand of ancient bamboo near the main hall.
Matcha Factory
Matcha tea is a taste sensation that has swept the world, with Nishio being one of the most renowned areas for its production. The tea is whisked from the powder of the tea rather than the whole leaves, and the production process takes over a year. Learn more about this fascinating process and sample some delicious wares at the matcha factory.
Ryokan Inn with Okami Ladies
Attention to service is taken to new heights by the okami women, clad in traditional kimonos, who tend to Ryokan inns. The okami is a highly trained and revered position that can be handed down from generation to generation. Often the wife of Ryokan proprietor, but occasionally the owner herself, the okami is the equivalent of a general manager and is responsible for almost everything at the inn, including greeting and serving food to the guests, as well as handling reservations and the front desk. Your visit includes a delicious tea complete with sweets, accompanied by a short Japanese harp concert.
WHAT YOU WILL SEE ALONG THE WAY:
Gamagori is a seaside sightseeing destination whose natural surroundings and mild climate make it a water-filled wonderland in all seasons.
