WHAT YOU VISIT
Palazzina dei Mulini
Originally built in 1724 by the Grand Duke Gian Gastone de' Medici as a gardener's residence, the building later served as the seat of the Artillery and the Engineer Corps and housed artillery officers. After Napoleon was exiled on the island in 1814, the building was modified and became the official residence of the emperor and today, it's part of the National Museum of Napoleonic Residences. Your outside visit includes a stop at the Neoclassical stone façade that's adorned with "N's" and bees, the symbol of immortality and resurrection.
Vigilanti Theater
In 1815, Napoleon had the 17th century Carmine in Portoferraio church transformed into a theater with a horse–shoe plan and four levels of theater boxes topped by a gallery. Napoleon's sister Pauline organized performances, parties and dances and worked to engage a French company. While the interior has been renovated, the curtain, which depicts Napoleon as Apollo, god of the arts, still hangs on stage.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
Palazzina dei Mulini sits atop a promontory between Forte Falcone and Forte Stella offering scenic views of Portoferraio and the harbor.
