What You Will Visit:
Otago Peninsula Mountain Bike Adventure
Get some exercise and enjoy the magnificent views of the Otago Peninsula when you tour by mountain bike from secluded Hooper's Inlet to Victory Beach in the Okia Reserve. Set off caravan-style on a route that takes you on quiet, gravel roads and passes a variety of stunning landscapes. The reserve is home to a variety of native fauna, such as yellow-eyed penguins, fur seals and the endangered New Zealand sea lions. Okia is also significant for its importance to the Maori people because of their early ancestral living sites.
Okia Reserve/ Victory Beach
The Okia Reserve is home to a variety of native fauna, such as yellow-eyed penguins, fur seals and the endangered New Zealand sea lions. Here you'll find pristine, undeveloped Victory Beach, named in commemoration of the SS New Zealand Victory ship, which sank off its shores in 1861. Stretching approximately two miles (3.5 km), Victory Beach is surrounded by sand dunes and is the longest beach on Otago Peninsula.
What You Will See Along the Way:
Travel by van through Dunedin, home to a large concentration of Victorian and Edwardian buildings due to its rapid growth before and just after the turn of the century. From here, head to the Otago Peninsula, a narrow and hilly stretch of land that shelters Otago Harbour from the Pacific Ocean.
Photo Opportunity:
Capture photos of The Pyramids, set within the Okia reserve, unusual, perfectly geometric, basalt volcanic columns.
