Enjoy a relaxing four-hour sightseeing tour through the Plateau of Lassithi and visits to some of its most treasured attractions. After boarding your motorcoach you'll travel along the coast before climbing into Crete's rugged interior. As you make your way through the mountains, look out for the famed white-sailed wooden windmills. Designed by Venetian engineers in 1464, many are in a state of disrepair but still stand as a testament to their ingenuity and utility. Your first stop is the 14th century Monastery of Kera, considered Crete's most important church of the Byzantine era. Inside, you'll find walls adorned with remarkably vivid frescoes including scenes depicting the secret life of the Virgin Mary. Next, you'll visit Lassinthos Eco Park, which seeks to preserve the traditions and customs of Crete. Watch craftspeople at work creating products according to traditional Cretan methods. A pleasant ride takes you back to your ship.
Special Notes:
Visitors to the Kera Monastery must negotiate a pair of steps at the entrance. The monastery does not allow flash photography. Dress conservatively when visiting sacred sites: shorts are not permitted for members of either sex; women must cover their shoulders. The windmills are private property; they may or may not be operating when you visit the plateau. The sails are sometimes removed from the windmills before inclement weather and may or may not be in place during your visit; the tour operator makes no guarantees in this regard.
