Description

Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.

Upon arrival embark a boat for the approximately 60-minute ride to the nearby island of Spinaloga, also known as 'Kalidon'. Located on the eastern section of Crete, Spinaloga was once linked with the adjacent peninsula of Kolokitha and fortified to protect the entranceway of the ancient port of Olous.

In 1579, the Venetians fortified this small island in Elounda Bay and named it Spinalonga - 'long thorn'. The fortified island held out for 50 years after Crete fell to Ottoman invaders. From 1921 to 1957, it was also Europe's last lazaretto. Explore the island on foot. View the houses used by lepers and the sterilization rooms for visitors. There was even a theatre and a cinema. Spinalonga is also home to two post-Byzantine churches from the 17th century and also served as the setting for Victoria Bishop's best-selling novel, The Island, and Werner Herzog's experimental short film, Last Words. Today this unoccupied island is one of the main attractions in Crete.

Following an hour-long visit to Spinaloga, embark your boat for the approximately 60-minute return ride to Aghios Nikolaos. Upon arrival depart the pier on foot for a short guided walking tour of the town of Aghios Nikolaos.

Built on the western recess of Mirabello Bay, Aghios Nikolaos is undoubtedly the most picturesque harbour in Crete. A small Byzantine church of the same name is located on the peninsula of the port. This ancient town served as a harbour during Roman times and the first Byzantine period. You will also see the small lake lake of Agios Nikolaos in the centre of town known as Voulismeni ("sunken") which is the landmark of Aghios Nikolaos for visitors and locals alike. Following your walking tour you will have some free time to explore your surroundings, or do some shopping at the many stores on your own before returning to the pier.
