Description
Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.
For many years the Mayan ruins of Chacchoben remained hidden in the jungle, cut off from the world. Today, while it still keeps most of its secrets covered with lush tropical vegetation, Chacchoben is one of the ancient sites most visited from Costa Maya. Enter the heart of this abandoned ceremonial center and walk in the footsteps of the ruling families and nobles who called it home.
You'll experience the world of the ancient Maya and feel their vision as you walk a circular path that includes three excavated and restored pyramids, as well as many walls and staircases: all while enlivening your senses with the sounds of nature!
Join us on a journey to the ancient place of Mayan pilgrimage known today as Chacchoben, "The Place of Red Corn" on this moderately active half-day tour. At the pier you will be greeted by bilingual guides who will direct you to an air-conditioned bus. Onboard the bus your guide will brief you on the interesting history and unique culture of the tour ahead.
When you arrive, surrounded by a jungle your guide will escort you through the ruins, giving you complete explanations of the sacred temples and other structures located at the site. See the original red paint on the stucco walls of one of the pyramids and the temple where a mural was found showing the astronomical positions of the planet Venus. You will have time to climb the Gran Basamento taking you above tree level.
Here archaeologists found ceremonial offerings dating to around 1,000 B.C. Your guide will also explain about the wildlife and medicinal plants that are used by the modern-day descendants of the ancient Mayan people. Relax with a complimentary beverage and soak up the images of the unfolding centuries. Modern history of the site started in the mid 40's when Mr. Serviliano Cohuo, a young Maya man looking for the best land to settle down decided to start his farm in the area. Time passed and over the years the ruins of the ancient city of Chacchoben, became the backyard of Mr. Cohuo and his family.
Chacchoben was recognized as a ruin in 1972, when the American archeologist Dr. Peter Harrison reported it to the Mexican government. Harrison stumbled upon this site while flying a helicopter over Mexico and noticed numerous hills in predominately flat lands. Harrison realized there were temples beneath these hills, which were naturally covered over a period of 2000 years. Excavation began in 1994 by the Mexican National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) and the site was opened to the public in 2002.
You'll uncover a treasure trove of Mayan history during your exploration of Chacchoben and the narrated drive back to colorful Costa Maya will provide additional insight. Sit back and relax while stunning vistas unfold from emerald-green jungle and sparkling white sands to the shimmering turquoise sea.
