What you will visit:
Spike Island
Named Europe's top tourist attraction at the prestigious World Travel Awards 2017, Spike Island, the former fortress and prison off the coast of County Cork, is often referred to as the 'Irish Alcatraz.' Spike Island has had many lives. It housed a 7th-century Monastery, the largest prison in Victorian times and centuries of residential homes. Today, the island boasts the 200-year-old, star-shaped Fort Mitchel, which once held over 2,000 prisoners. This experiential museum tells the complex and diverse stories of the island's past. Guided tours take visitors for a stroll around the perimeter of the fortress as well as through the remains of the island village and down the dark corridors of the prison. It is even possible to stand in one of the cells.
What you will see along the way:
A scenic ferry ride is an opportunity to view the commanding, strategic position held by Spike Island within the sheltered mouth of the lower reaches of Cork Harbor. Enjoy the views as your ferry enters the waters of one of the largest natural harbors in the world. Your ride is fascinating, but it can be cool on deck so dress accordingly. Attractions within the fortress walls include the 1850s punishment block and spooky prison cells, the 1980s riot exhibition, Ireland's largest artillery gun park and a host of military, penal and cultural history museums
