Travel back 2,000 years when you journey along the Appian Way where many of Rome's Catacombs were built. According to Roman law of the time, it was forbidden to bury the dead inside the city and the catacombs were located outside Rome's walls. Once in Rome, you'll head under Rome's ancient streets and into the Roman Catacombs, a maze of subterranean passageways where Jews, pagans and early Christians were buried. During this fascinating tour, a specialized guide will share the catacombs' intriguing history as you're led through the dark and humid corridors. Here, you'll learn that the tunnels date between 1st and 5th centuries. After exploring this mysterious underworld, you'll journey into the Roman countryside for lunch at a quaint farmhouse. Back on the coach, you'll travel to Castel Gandolfo, and join an official Vatican Guide for a tour of the Apostolic Palace and Pope's Private Apartment.
