Showcasing Charleston's favorite restaurants and specialty shops, this "foodie" experience spotlights coastal South Carolina's culinary trends and culture. Meet up with your Charleston gourmand, who will discuss how Charleston cuisine is related to its rich heritage. Rice was the primary crop grown here in the 1700s and 1800s; it was enslaved workers who introduced the sweet potato, collard greens and okra-now staples of southern specialties. Added to this are the traditions of the Sephardic Jews, French Huguenots and settlers from Scotland, Germany and Ireland, all contributing to the global gastronomy of Charleston. As you stroll through the cobblestone streets, stop to sample some authentic Charleston dishes, such as Callie's Hot Little Biscuit for a delicious mini bite, Byrd Cookie Company, as well as the City Market to visit a local sweetgrass basket artisan. At the conclusion of your tour, bid goodbye to your guide and return to port with delicious memories.
