Begin this 3.5 hour tour 4 kms from Burnie at the Emu River, Fernglade, where all things wild at burnie will take you on a 500 metre river amble. This 50 acre reserve is home to around 60 bird species, many threatened species, wallabies, possums, devils, quolls, and many platypus. The platypus and entire forest ecosystem is interpreted by a qualified and experienced guide, with many years working in wildlife management, ecotourism and conservation. This is a true ecotourism experience, in one of the recognised top 3 wild platypus viewing locations in the world, and the only one located near a port.
After travelling 8kms up the river from Fernglade to arrive at Emu Valley Rhododendron Garden , you will enjoy a scrumptious morning tea featuring native bush foods before exploring this relaxing and tranquil garden.
The Garden contains over half the worlds cultivated species Rhododendrons and many other compatible plants in what can best be described as a garden for all seasons. The Garden plantings are organized into discrete areas in which species from each part of the world are grown together in a setting of appropriate companion plantings.
Landscaped from virgin bush 35 years ago by volunteers, this 11 hectare garden contains lakes, waterfalls, several bridges, gazebos, long dry stone walls and numerous walking paths.
Rhododendrons commence flowering in August with peak flowering from September to November. Vireya rhododendrons flower at least twice throughout the year. Although most folk naturally associate the Garden with flowers, Autumn is truly a spectacular vista at the Garden. So don't forget your camera.
