From 1776 to 1783 France supplied the U.S. with millions of livres in cash and credit and also committed 63 warships, 22,000 sailors and 12,000 soldiers to the war of independence. Through the centuries, the relationship has always been important for both nations. From the pier, you'll travel to the town of Plougastel-Daoulas. During extensive air raids during World War II, its elaborate 17th century Calvary was badly damaged, but American officer, John D. Skilton promised to one day have it repaired. The restoration was completed in 1949, and in 1959, the town named a square in his honor. On your return to Brest, you'll visit Brest Castle, a medieval fortress that houses the National Marine Museum. Inside you'll find 1,700 years of maritime history including exhibits that detail France's contributions to the beginning days of America's independence.
