In 1840, the Treaty of Waitangi recognized Maori ownership of their lands and other properties, and gave them rights as British subjects. Discover what impact the treaty made on Maori history and culture during this inspiring and meaningful experience at the revered Waitangi Treaty Grounds. Built for a government official, the Georgian-style Treaty House offers a look at British life in the 19th century. Steps away is the Te Rau Aroha Museum of the Price of Citizenship where you'll learn of the Maori involvement and sacrifice made in military conflicts from 1840 to today and their struggle for equal rights as citizens. Join in a powhiri (welcome) at the beautifully carved Te Whare Runanga meeting house for a cultural performance of waiata (songs), poi and a traditional haka (war dance). After the concert you can meet the performers and take photos followed by a visit to the gift shop.
