Wakas are Maori canoes that are used for fishing and river travel and range in size from small, unornamented canoes to decorated war canoes that can reach 39 meters (130 feet) in length. What better way to learn the history of the Maori and their relationship with the ecology than on the water with a Ngapuhi guide? This once-in-a-lifetime adventure is cited as one of the best cultural activities in Northland. And you won't just be riding in a canoe but actually helping paddle the scenic tidal estuaries of the Waitangi River. As you glide along, you'll see flora and fauna such as lush podocarp trees, the blue duck and Nakeen night heron that only breeds in this location. While nature may be the premier attraction there is also a deep culture and rich history to experience. Your Ngapuhi guide will bring Maori stories to life through songs and chants.
Special Notes:
Participants should be in good physical condition and be able to paddle. Wear sandals as your feet will get wet. Bring insect repellant, sun block, sunhat, sunglasses, and your camera.Participants must be at least 6 years old.
