Following the fall of the Ottoman Empire, King Otto, the first king of modern Greece and his wife Queen Amalia, built an impressive Neo-Gothic castle in the area of Ilion just outside Athens. Built in 1854 on 200 hectares (494 acres), a tour of the estate includes a wine tasting and a light lunch. Outside, the grounds are landscaped with lawns, paths, fountains, trees, a large herb garden and the impressive castle known as Queen's Tower, or Pyrgos Vasilissi. The exterior boasts ramparts with arched windows and doorways. Inside, you'll find exquisitely decorated rooms with magnificent ceiling art, elegant furnishings and a reception hall whose stunning handmade parquet floor requires guests remove their shoes. Following a stroll through the vineyards, you'll visit the winery where you'll be treated to a sampling of estate-produced wines served with a selection of breads, cheeses, spinach and feta cheese pie and more.
