Nature lovers will thrill to a day spent hiking through the spectacular Shirakami-Sanchi beech forest. Tucked inside the Shirakami Mountains, the forest offers the opportunity to walk through a primeval forest untouched since ancient times. The two-hour walk can be strenuous at times, so wear very comfortable shoes. A picturesque drive brings you to the Shirakami Mountain Visitor's Center, where you'll see exhibits detailing the more than 500 different kinds of plants and a variety of animals in the ecosystem. Then, travel to the beginning of the trail, at Aqua Green Village. Tuck into a box lunch, then begin the walk through the verdant forest of 70-foot-tall wingnut trees and 79-foot-tall Japanese beech trees. Be on the lookout for the indigenous critters that call the forest home. You may see a golden eagle or a hawk soaring above you. After soaking up the picture-postcard scenery, relax on the drive back to port.
