Considered the Grand Canyon of Northern Europe, Sautso is a powerful and inspiring landscape. Measuring seven miles long and averaging about 360 feet deep, the Alta River meanders through Sautso's high cliffs. Although a dam was built upstream the area still retains its scenic beauty. From Alta, you'll travel past charming farmlands and slate mountains with a river leaping from rock slab to slab, and through the start of the vast and formidable Finnmarksvidda mountain plateau. When you arrive at the dam, you'll see a film detailing its construction followed by a pleasant walk across the top of the dam. Finally, you will stop at a nearby Sami tentcalled a 'lavvu.' Once inside, you'll relax around a small fire with a snack of Maze-cake, coffee and dried reindeer meat. Then, you'll be entertained by stories of Sami life, listen to the chant-like songs of the Sami called 'joik' and learn about their history and culture.
Special Notes:
The trip to the visitor center, film and dam is approximately 150 yards along a large downward tunnel.Details
