Get acquainted with this hidden jewel of the Arctic north with a tour around the town. From the comfort of the coach, you'll see sights such as Alta's oldest district, Bossekop, where Dutch whalers settled in the 17th century, and some of the first buildings erected after World War II. Have your camera ready as you stop for a visit at the Northern Lights Cathedral. Acknowledged as one of the architectural icons of the north, the sacred structure is wrapped in shimmering titanium to reflect the dazzling display of light and color of the winter sky. Its spiraling shape winds up to form a pointed belfry 154 feet above the ground. The interior is similarly eye-catching, with an utterly modern 13-foot-high bronze Christ by Danish artist Peter Brandes. Photos taken, you'll continue your sightseeing tour and return to the pier.
