Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.
Discover Alta's recent and ancient history beginning with a sightseeing tour around the city including the neighborhood of Bossekop, where Dutch whalers settled in the 17th century; Elvebakken, in the east, settled in the 1700s by refugees from Finland and now home to the airport and harbor, and central Alta with its pedestrian shopping centers. And no visit to Alta is complete without a tour of the Alta Museum. Once you arrive, a leisurely summer stroll along the outdoor path reveals rock carvings. Look closely and you'll see boats and fish, hunters and shamans, moose, reindeer, bears and fertility symbols. A walk inside the museum reveals ancient rock carving stones, as well as sacred art from the late Middle Ages, artifacts of the Sami culture and more. If you'd like to bring home a souvenir, stop by the gift shop or sit down in the café with a refreshment while enjoying the panoramic views.
Special Notes:
In summer, there is a 1.5km guided walk to view the Petroglyphs with a gentle incline. The rock carvings outdoors are covered with snow in the winter, typically from November to April. The carvings may or may not be available in October and May, depending on the weather.Details
