Explore Northern Iceland's dramatic and dynamic landscapes on this all-day excursion. Travel to Namaskard to witness boiling hot mud pools with dense vapors that cloak the hot sulfur pits at one of the most active volcanic areas on Iceland. At Dimmuborgir, see weirdly shaped lava formations that were left exposed in the bed as this former lava lake cooled and receded. Continue to Skutustadir where you'll discover large craters situated on the southern shore of Lake Myvatn called pseudo, or rootless craters. They were formed when lava overflowed the lakeshore's sodden ground. Take a photo and then it's off to lunch where you'll enjoy a sit-down meal at a local restaurant. Afterwards, you'll head to Godafoss Waterfall. We'll return to Akureyri for a brief tour of the town, stopping along a scenic coastal road at a vantage point, if time allows, near the fjord for a panoramic view of the town and its harbor before heading back to the ship.
Special Notes:
The drive between Akureyri and Godafoss is approximately 45 minutes. The return drive from Namaskard to Akureyri is approximately 90 minutes. This tour does not operate on all calls due to the duration of the ship call being too short. The rocky areas around Godafoss Falls are slippery and wet with jagged volcanic edges; passengers should take care if leaving the designated paths to take pictures and wear appropriate footwear. Guests should stay within marked footpaths at the Namaskard area.
Small black flies (midges or "no-see-'ems") populate the Lake Myvatn area. Although they don't bite, they can be quite annoying. Wear insect repellent and bring a light scarf or net to cover your face and/or mouth.
