Embark on a journey of discovery that begins with a visit to the mesmerizing Lake Tazawa. Formed eons ago by a volcanic explosion, the sapphire blue lake is Japan's deepest at 1,388 feet. The picture-perfect setting of tree-covered mountains is reflected in the water, giving the lake a mythical atmosphere. It's also the setting of an ancient legend. On the southwest side of the lake stands a gold statue of a woman named Tatsuko who was turned into a dragon by the gods due to her desire for eternal beauty. Nature may be Akita's premier attraction but there is also a deep culture and rich history to experience at Kakunodate Samurai District, untouched since its founding in 1620.
