When your cruise docks in St. Kitts, you will have the option to head over to its sister island, Nevis. The island is small enough to explore in just a few hours, but it won't take you that long to realize why it's also a top celebrity vacation spot. From its former sugar plantations to its breathtaking beaches and resident green monkeys, Nevis is a must-see spot on a Caribbean vacation as part of a St. Kitts excursion.
Getting ThereNevis Island is located just south of St. Kitts. Nevis is smaller than St. Kitts and has an intimate community atmosphere. From St. Kitts, it's just a short, scenic boat ride to Nevis' capital city of Charlestown. The boats leave all day long and into the night. As you travel, you'll be able to see both islands on the clear water.
Tour the IslandNevis is easy to get through in one day, as it spans only 36 square miles. You'll immediately notice that it is very green — both on the ground and in the air. Because of renewable geothermal energy that comes from the dormant volcano at Mount Nevis, the island has some of the most environmentally friendly power in the Caribbean.
Take a tour of Nevis: You'll start off in Charlestown, birthplace of Alexander Hamilton, one of the founding fathers of the United States. From there, you'll head to the Nevis Bath Springs and wind up at Pinney's Beach with a drink in your hand. Or, if you have free time on the island, you can check out the Eden Brown Estate, the Horatio Nelson Museum, and the Botanical Gardens of Nevis.
See the MonkeysOne of the liveliest activities on the island of Nevis is visiting the green vervet monkeys. These animals were first brought to Nevis and St. Kitts by British settlers, and are said to have since multiplied to outnumber the people on the island.
You may see these monkeys at beach restaurants and bars, but to get a better look at them in their natural habitat, head through the island's less developed areas — especially the tropical forests. The monkeys are most active in the late evening and early morning.
Hit the BeachYou can swim, sun yourself, and enjoy a tasty lunch at Pinney's Beach, which is just a short walk from downtown Charlestown. The beach is very long, so there's plenty of room for everyone to relax along the Caribbean Sea.
Chrishi Beach Club is another excellent spot to spend a few hours. Enjoy some frozen daiquiris on one of the beach beds on the white sand, or sit at a table and enjoy the view while having lunch. It's also a rare spot on the island where you can get gluten-free cuisine.
Enjoy an ExcursionThe best way to see the most of Nevis on a Caribbean vacation is to take an excursion from St. Kitts when your ship docks. You'll find a wide variety of tours that will take you around the island by land and sea.
