Check Out the Sky-high Attractions of Kuala Lumpur

Aerial view of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Although it started as a small colonial mining outpost in the 1850s, the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur has since grown into a major metropolis that is one of the most impressive destinations in Southeast Asia. During a shore excursion on an Asian cruise, you will love getting to know this lively and charismatic city.

Without a doubt, the most famous attraction in Kuala Lumpur is the Petronas Towers, a pair of twin skyscrapers that soar more than 1,400 feet into the air. Although these towers once held the title as the world's tallest buildings, they have since lost the honor to a series of other structures. Despite no longer being the highest, they can still give you unparalleled views of the bustling Kuala Lumpur metropolis, so a visit here is not to be missed.

Another sky-high attraction here is the Kuala Lumpur Tower, an impressive telecommunications mast where you can check out a wide range of shops, an observation deck and an open-air amphitheater. You can even take in great views as you grab a bite to eat in the tower's revolving restaurant.

One of the city's most important cultural institutions is the National Museum, which contains exhibits detailing the traditions and history of Malaysia from the Stone Age through the present. Here, you will be able to see an array of interesting displays, including one featuring headgear worn by Malay rulers.

To experience Malaysia's religious culture, pay a visit to the Masjid Jamek Mosque. This Muslim house of worship is the city's oldest and was built on its first burial ground, rooting it in Kuala Lumpur's history. Visitors enjoy reflecting in a grove of palm trees situated at the confluence of two rivers.

In Merdeka Square, also known as Independence Square, you will be able to see many important structures, including the Sultan Abdul Samad Building and St. Mary's Anglican Cathedral. One highlight here is the Royal Selangor Club, a cricket club that served as the site of Malaysia's declaration of independence from Britain.

To escape from the hustle and bustle of downtown Kuala Lumpur, head to the Lake Gardens. Here, you will find more than 200 acres of beautiful parks and botanical gardens as well as an orchid house and a facility that holds more than 6,000 butterflies. View Asia cruises.
