St. Kitts, St. Kitts & Nevis
This Caribbean island is covered by a lush tropical forest, with the mist-enshrouded Mount Liamuiga at its center. St. Kitts is part of a tiny two-island independent state with Nevis, and natural preservation here is paramount as their law states no building may be taller than the surrounding palm trees.
Brimstone Hill
This massive fortress of black volcanic stone rises nearly 800 feet above sea level. A man-made outgrowth of the surroundings from which it was composed, it stands as a monument to the skill of the British military engineers who designed it, as well as to the strength of the African slaves who built it.
Basseterre
Set against lush green hills in a low lying area of the island, this capital city's name means "lowland" in French. Basseterre's British colonial past is seen in the Circus, a roundabout fashioned after London's Piccadilly and in the Berkeley Memorial Clock, thought to be a replica of Big Ben.
Frigate Bay Peninsula
Perched on a hillside between the Atlantic and the Caribbean, this peninsula is shaped like an outstretched neck. And it is home to a luxury resort and a host of activities -- from pristine diving, golfing and helicopter rides, to casino gambling, volcano hikes, guided rainforest tours and boat trips to Nevis Island.
